Panasonic TC-P54V10 Review – Best TV of 2009

In this Panasonic TC-P54V10 review we are going to take a look at what is the best plasma TV of 2009 in the 54 inch size class. This review applies to both TC-P54V10 (54 inch) as well as TC-P50V10 (50 inch) because both of them are part of Panasonic V10 series. There are other size variants available as well, however it is possible that those are slightly different (not much though). Excepting Panasonic Z1 which is probably going to be sold only through specialized dealers, TC-P54V10 is the top of the line plasma TV from Panasonic. It is at the top of their 2009 lineup both because of its exceptional picture quality, but also because of its rich feature set. This is a high-end TV, so naturally you will have to pay a relatively high price for it.

What Makes it the Best HDTV of 2009?

Pioneer Kuro Elite models have been and remain the best HDTVs of all times. However they are now discontinued since Pioneer is no longer manufacturing TVs. The gap left open by Pioneer’s leave is now to be filled by Panasonic and Samsung, both having exceptionally good plasma TV-s in their high-end series. LG is also present on the plasma television market, however nobody seems to have reviewed their 2009 models. Though, Samsung came with visible improvements to their plasma TVs this year, especially in the black level department, Samsung is still visibly superior. The black levels of TC-P54V10 are simply fantastic. Though they are not able to surpass those seen in Pioneer Elite models, they come close and are visibly better than the black levels of any other HDTV out there. With deep blacks and excellent shadow detail the image on a TC-P54V10 is life-like. Combined with the accurate colors offered by THX mode, the result is superb. A delight to a viewer’s eyes.

From Viera Cast to Picture Controls

Naturally, as one might expect from any high-end pricy HDTV, Panasonic TC-P54V10 has a very rich feature set. Though LG’s PS80 series come with an integrated hard drive disk and NetFlix support, making it the most feature-rich model out there, the set of features present on Panasonic TC-P54V10 isn’t small either. You get the old services that Viera Cast offered since 2008 (weather, stocks, news, etc) and on top of that, beginning with this year you have access to Amazon Video on Demand (VoD). Aside from these “exotic” features, you have access to a rich set of picture controls. Taking into consideration that though color accuracy is good in THX mode, one can complain about its default settings in other modes, the rich set of picture and color controls will come handy when calibrating the TV in non-THX modes.

Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV Review

If I had rated this TV a few days ago, it would have gotten five stars. However, it just died the other night while my wife and I were watching TV on it. It made a ‘pop’, and the picture went away.

I tried disconnecting the power, and turning it back on. It blinks the red LED ten times, waits, then repeats. Looks like an error code to me.

It was a great TV before it died. It died about two months after the one year warranty ran out.

Chris Shaker

Update 2009-10-27: Got a call from Panasonic today, and they are going to cover the full cost of replacing the plasma display. Turns out the plasma display had a two year warrantee, even though the TV itself only had a one year warrantee. Thank you Panasonic!

One Sheet of Glass Design

Beautiful, elegant, and functional — a single pane of glass covers the entire front of the television, including the bezel. This design reduces or eliminates the “halo” effect that can occur around lettering and logos with traditional 3-pane designs

Amazing color reproduction

The incredible black reproduction of a Panasonic High-Definition Plasma TV results in impressive contrast and beautiful, natural colors. So you’ll get warm, accurate skin tones, gorgeous greens, breathtaking blues and vivid reds. For color that’s as rich and bold as life itself, look to a Panasonic Plasma TV.

Consistent brightness from any angle

A Panasonic Plasma combines anti-glare and anti-reflection technology with the natural light-emitting properties of plasma, to give you a super-wide viewing range with a crisp, beautiful image from almost any angle.

Smooth, graceful motion

When you’re watching sports or movies with fast-motion graphics, you want a TV that can keep up with the action. With over 900 lines of moving picture, self-illuminating plasma displays eliminate afterimages in fast-action scenes. So whether you’re watching a sporting event or an action-packed movie, you’ll always get the most impressive viewing experience possible.

24p native reproduction

Movies are shot at 24 frames per second. Unfortunately, TVs operating at 60Hz can only refresh 20 times per second, which means they must drop every fifth frame. With its 2008 Viera PZ85, PZ800, and PZ850 models, Panasonic introduces 24p native resolution, which means 24 frame per second movie content is reproduced frame for frame exactly, making for true-to-source smoothness of motion.

1,000,000:1 Contrast

The Panasonic’s Real Black system (a pre-discharge suppression system) and improved panel production processes combine to reproduce outstanding blacks with superb contrast. Each image is richly expressive, from bright scense, like scorching desert landscapes, to dark cave scenes. Compare the image produced by conventional HDTV on the left to the Real Black image produced on the right

More Colors

Viera HDTVs support the xvYCC color profile (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or “x.v. color” for short. Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation “xvYCC” color space actually offers  an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize.

  • Next-generation “xvYCC” color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
  • Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
  • Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors

deep color eliminates visible color banding

Deep Color

Where x.v. color expands the available range of colors your HDTV can display, Deep Color increases the number of colors your HDTV can display within that range, for smoother transitions from color to color.

  • Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors
  • Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors
  • Enables increased contrast ratio
  • Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white.

Connectivity

Viera flat panel HDTVs interact with an array of high-definition devices and services, making it easy for consumers to access and enjoy content as never before. As of 2008, Viera Link is compatible with Onkyo and Yamaha home theater systems.

Videos and stills recorded on SD cards can easily be viewed via the SD slots on Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc players and Viera HDTVs. Viera Link means easy connectivity via HDMI cables. Finally, consumers can easily operate their Blu-Ray Disc players, DVD recorders and home theater systems with a single remote control device.

Equipped with an RGB input terminal, VIERA can connect with your PC and serve as a large-screen monitor. 4 HDMI inputs to connect all of your devices directly to your television.

long life

Long Life

Panasonic plasma panels are rated to last 100,000 hours, which is about 30 years of regular or 11 years of non-stop usage before the brightness of the display is halved.

Blu-Ray disc player

Get Full HD with Blu-Ray Disc Players

A Panasonic 1080p plasma television is able to render 1920×1080 pixels, but standard DVDs have a resolution of just 720×480. Blu-ray discs output true 1080p High-Definition resolution and have a storage capacity ten times greater than standard DVDs, so no pixel gos to waste.

TH50PZ700U – Tracy T. Stout – illinois
Yes, I know this is supposed to be for 800U’s and mines a 700U but the point is that they are basically the same and i need to vent. I referenced consumer reports and at the time the 700U was the cream of the crop. I will agree, it is a very nice unit. the sound produced from the tv speakers are very impressive. (surround system hadnt been hooked up yet). its all for not as this TV was purchased 2 years ago and now its gone black. so yes, this tv is a great tv….its RELIABILITY on the other hand is NOT!!!!! you know, you get these reviews and such, when they are new tv’s, they’re ALL nice tv’s but i guess when it comes down to it, its about reliability as well. i have had CRT tv’s last for over 20 years. this is pathetic. a 00 unit only lasts 2 years. i have since read reviews with similar problems with these panasonics. the repair guy told me that there was a class action suit and that panasonic has extended the warranties on 42″ plasmas. any lawyers out there want to see what we can do for the 50″ers. picture and function great…….while it lasts.

Awesome TV – lgh5000 – Southern Colorado
I did a lot of research, and decided to go with this TV. I haven’t been sorry! The picture is so clear – it’s absolutely amazing watching sports. And it makes me feel good that a year after my purchase, I have yet to see someone else with a better picture! I ordered from amazon, and am so happy with the price and service. Thank you!

My reference Panel – R.Henry – Bronx, NY USA
I’ve owned this panel for over a year now and I couldn’t be happier although I have one minor peeve. I just purchased my first blu-ray player and there is no way to label an input blu-ray. Also I’d like to add I’ve played several discs at 1080p/24 and found none of the flickering problems mentioned by other reviewers. (Oppo BDP-83). If I get the 100,000 hrs quoted for the half life I’ll be one happy camper.

All about HDTV

The HDTV has become increasingly popular since its introduction. There are many well-known electronic manufacturers that have designed many models of the HD style TV. There are multiple sizes, styles and colors that can be attributed to a HD television. Likewise, there are various price tags found on the HD television. With so many choices and decisions ahead of you, don’t feel overwhelmed; there are many great resources to help make your search as quick and painless as possible.

HDTV has been around since the mid 1960’s. In Japan, the first model of the HDTV was created. The innovative electronic geniuses of the United States were quick to follow and the race to perfecting the high definition technology was off to the races around the mid 1990’s.

Basically, the term “HD” refers to the quality of the broadcast signal that is sent through the television set. The high definition signal represents images that are as crystal clear and lifelike as possible. When you watch a program via the HDTV, you will quickly understand why it is becoming the favorite method of watching TV! The HD signal is digital in nature and provides viewers a 16:9 wide screen format, the same as used in movie theaters. The incredible, lifelike images displayed through HD televisions are unbelievable! You can literally feel like you at the racetrack or on the football field! If you are watching a concert, you will have a front row seat to the magical madness, too!

Many of the leading television manufacturers make at least one model of the HD television set, including: Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Hitachi, RCA, JVC, Mitsubishi, Pioneer and Magnavox. There are multiple sizes of the HDTV available, from as small as 13 inches to as large as 85 inches!

3 types to choose from

There are three different formats that offer the HD technology, including: CRT (paints the image onto the screen. This style is perfect in any lighting condition and from every angle.), LCD (uses 2 different polarized, transparent panels to house a liquid in the middle.) and the Plasma (digital images at a high resolution are created.). Be sure to do a little research to find the format that you will prefer.

Rear-projection CRT televisions are older technology. CRT TV’s use three separate cathode ray tubes to create red, green, and blue and the TV combines the three beams before magnifying and projecting the image. The image quality isn’t as good as Plasma or LCD technology.

Flat-Panel LCD TVs (liquid crystal display) technology are designed to create sharp, bright images in any lighting condition. LCD flat screen TV models work by shining light through pixel cells, with each cell containing a red, green, and blue component.

Plasma TVs are the thinnest of all types of high definition televisions. You can find a huge range of widths, from 36, right up to 72″ inches that offer amazing color accuracy and saturation.

The 2 different types of HDTV

There are two types of hdtv systems, ones that are HDTV-ready and other systems that have an integrated system. HDTV-ready is the definition for a television that is capable high definition programming with the installation of a receiver or tuner. An integrated system is a television with a built in HDTV receiver enabling you to watch programming right out of the box.

If you are not sure as to which brand, size or format you prefer, there are many resources that you can access to make the decision a little easier. Other consumers, that have made a purchase of an HDTV, have written HDTV reviews on their TV of choice. These reviews are unbiased in that some may be favorable and other may not. One thing you can count on is that these reviews are not biased; everyday consumers, like yourself, write them. No one likes to spend their hard earned money on a product that they would have never given a second glance, had they been forewarned. Well, with reviews and ratings from other consumers, you will have a “heads up”!

When you are in the market for a great new TV, the HDTV is a perfect choice! There are many sizes, styles, formats and prices available. You should have absolutely no problem finding the perfect one for your home or business. If you demand only the best in your life, the HD style TV will fit right in!

Which is the Best Salter Stainless Steel Scale?

In the battle for the title of best salter stainless steel scale, there are two main contenders. The first is the Salter 11 Pound Electronic Scale and the second is the Salter 019. They are in no particular order by the way.

First, let’s review the similarities. Both of these scales are top rated, best selling products in the Amazon marketplace. Both of these scales weigh food. If you’re looking for the best salter stainless steel scale for the bathroom, you might want to move along to a different article. Out of all of Salter’s line of stainless steel scales, these two took the cake over any other types.

Now let’s take a close look at the differences. First, we’ll look at the Salter 11 Pound Electronic Scale. The Salter 11 Pound Electronic Scale gets a 4 out of 5 rating with 20 different customer reviews. 13 of those reviews scored 5 stars across the board. Only 3 customers rated this scale a 1. One complaint was over the size of the batteries that the scale uses. One complaint was that the scale stopped working after two years. I wouldn’t see that as being a huge problem considering that the scale comes with a 10 year warranty. The third complaint was because the customer received the wrong item, which has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the above mentioned product.

Now let’s take a look at the Salter 019. This salter stainless steel scale received 5 out of 5 stars with 6 customer reviews. It received 5 5 star ratings and 1 4 star rating.

So, which is the better salter scale? They’re both amazing products. The one you might be interested in buying will greatly depend on your needs and your budget. It is also important to note that the Salter 019 only weighs up to 16oz. So, if you’re looking for a salter stainless steel scale that will be used primarily for small weights and nutritional use then you may want to go with that one. However, if you need a larger kitchen type scale then the Salter 11 Pound Scale would be better suited for the job. The answer to our question is that the best salter stainless steel scale out of the two is the one that better suits your needs.

Great TV, this is my 3rd Panasonic Plasma and I am happy with all three. Great vendor. Setup and play in about 10 minutes. Has all the auxillary inputs you could possibly need and easy to select with customizable labels for each input.

2nd purchase of this item – L. Gutowski – Riverside, CA
I’m total sold on the picture quality, it is just perfect. It hangs slightly below a florescent light and the reflection is so slight that it doesn’t even matter. It’s light weight and ease of use are wonderful. Picture quality is perfect for movies or standard TV or HD.

LCD HDTV Reviews – What Are The Advantages?

One of the nicest advantages of these displays are the fact that it is easier on the eyes and easier to view especially verses CRT displays. LCD televisions are also bright and work very well in many different lighting conditions. Glare and flicker is virtually absent and the picture is still bright even in rooms with alot of ambient light. Viewing angles can be up to 160 degrees ( 80 degrees in both directions – when viewing off to the right or left ). Displays with positive LCD TV reviews will usually include a better viewing angle in the rating.

Another advantage is that dot pitches are getting better and better. The dot pitch is basically the distance between sub-pixels of the same color. The closer together the pixels the better the sharpness of the picture. A dot pitch of 26 mm is better than a dot pitch of 28 mm. Shoot for a dot pitch of 28 mm or better. Additionally, LCD televisions have very good colors – 256 colors for each of the sub-pixels (red, green and blue) with smoother pictures (no scan lines) and you can start watching them right out of the box as they have everything you need built right into one system.

Displays with the better LCD TV reviews today describe the improvement of their response times. The better the response time the more smooth the motion is on the display and the less ghosting that occurs so fast action scenes will look much more smoother and fluid. Many liquid crystal displays today have response times of 20 ms (milliseconds) or better. Another advantage that should be mentioned is that they work very well and have very nice pictures when connected to computers. Many people connect their media center PCs to their HDTVs and the LCD TV will give you some of the most clear and crisp pictures when using your computer with your HDTV display.

The life span of these displays are about 60, 000 hours. So if you watch TV 8 hours a day 7 days a week the display could last up to 20 years, by then you will probably have a better LCD television with at least LED technology or even better. The LCD TV reviews also usually talk about the fluorescent bulbs and the higher rated displays will have better bulbs so ensure you purchase a brand name display as they usually have top quality bulbs in their displays as well as using more accurate longer lasting backlighting and colors.

When doing your research, check to see if the bulb can be replaced or if it is built into the system. Also check into how the backlighting system is warranted as sometimes the backlighting warranty is shorter than the warranty of the display itself.

Great Price Vizio VO370M for $569.00

Vizio VO370M 37″ LCD TV 1080p HDTV Review

Otherwise either go bigger (such as a 1080p projector) or just get a higher contrast 720p display. That said…

Still wowed at how good the new LCDs are. A year or two with an Olevia 37″ I thought was great compared at home with this new Vizio 37″ 1080P downstairs: Damn. All I had to do was put everything in the middle setting, sharpness on 5 (out of 7), turn off all the processing and features, and put the backlight at about 10-20 to get the whites bright enough, or higher for brighter rooms. And the in-content blacks are still inky. It renders the entire contrast and color range faithfully except for a little laziness in the middle of the dynamic range curve that can seem “smoky” on some older video mastering jobs (you truly need CRT, Plasma, or exotics to get it perfect). And it doesn’t have to be excruciatingly bright like the Olevias. That 237t-t12 even at it’s lowest of three crude backlight settings still is kind of blinding in bright scenes, and I have the Brightness down to the point at which the blacks do not get blacker but I can still barely see the foot of the contrast curve.

That continuously adjustable backlight on the new screens is essential. Combined with better real native (not the dynamic software) contrast, and I am floored. And it was 0 cheaper than the Olevia originally! The only thing I’m troubled with is the promotion of this dynamic contrast mode so much in an effort to compete with Plasmas. I think the contrast really is getting good enough on these 37″ LCDs that it doesn’t need to hide it. Again, there’s still obviously room for improvement as Dark City and the Fifth Element still aren’t quite filmy yet in their gorgeous contrast rendition on any LCD I’ve seen yet, but it’s getting there. At a higher cost, the newest multi-LED-based screens allow even more control over the backlight, but the only time I see any non-uniformity is on a completely blank, black screen with a very slight flashlight effect in the upper right. Much less than the 237t-t12. Now I must start worrying about upgrading the computer to have the horsepower to get one of these for my upstairs system! X-Plane or Blackshark in 1080P just isn’t going to happen on a P4.

Set Failed 11 months After Purchase – OK –
The set worked fine while it worked. When it failed 11 months in, I contacted Vizio Customer Service to see what we needed to do to resolve the problem. I won’t go into detail on the problem here, as I understand that electronics can and do fail. The main issue I have is with Vizio’s customer service. I provided a detailed email (pictures included) describing the problem with the picture. Had to call them no less than 5 times, and each time it was as if they had no prior information. I had to refer their techs to the email, line by line. Email described the problem in detail as well as the steps I had taken in an effort to resolve them. I fully believe the failure of this set after 11 months of use is an exception. If the company had provided even marginally satisfactory customer service, I would likely buy Vizio again down the road, but now that I have been exposed to their CSR’s and Techs, and their cumbersome procedures, I will not purchase, or recommend their products. They weren’t even close to meeting my expectations of reasonable cuatomer service. Probably a good product, but a bad choice if you need service support.

    HD equals Highly Disappointed-rushed judgement – J. Myles –
I had hear that VIZIO a subdivision of Toshiba provided a HIGH quality HDTV. So I bought the Vizio VO370M. It was easy to set up. I noticed that the auto tuner was finding less channels then my SAMSUNG. I also noticed how much larger the 37″ Vizio’s screen was when compaired to the 32″ Samsung. I was looking forward to a bigger screen and great TV viewing. The sound quality was excellent. Then came the Vizio picture. I expected the analog transmission channels to be less then crystal chear. But the “HIGH DEFINITION” channels were all a tremendous disappointment. The picture quality was VERY POOR. The imaging was fuzzy and the colors were bleeding. So I called the seller and was told to “simply adjust it to your liking”. I said give it “One More Try”.

After spending two hours trying to adjust all the channels I gave up and went out for lunch and to look at other models of HDTVs. I returned four hours later and the picture seemed to have improved. Letting the HDTV run seemed to improve the picture. The images were sharp and the colors were clean and sharp. Long ago, flat panel computer monitors required a “burn in” period when they had not been tested at the factory. Seems that the picture quality continues to improve with use. Which indicates that the VO370M was actually new and not a return.

In all fairness, I can now recommend the Vizio VO370M or the Vizio VO420E. The quality of the picture is there, BUT it does take time for all the pixels to become luminated. Maybe, others did not wait long enough for all full system quality to activate. I don’t know. Note the actual size of the screen is 37.2″ and the power use is actually less then advertised in the documentation. This is a very good HDTV. I can not give it 5 stars because the documentation leaves a lot to be desired and the “burn in” period is frustrating for we who want instant on perfection. Also the lighted VIZIO symbol on the front of the TV is quite bright even when the TV is in standby. But all things considered, after giving a lot of time to set the screen image, sound quality, backlighting, etc, etc, etc, this is a REALLY Great HDTV.

cheap crappy picture! – Thesby Tolbert –
